  4. Science and Society Discussion Series: Mystery and Science through Organic Agriculture

    Jim Durst of Durst Organic Growers will present the theory, practices, and sanctity of organic agriculture through pictures, stories, and experiences. Enhancing living soils, practicing sustainable pest and disease management, using water conserving irrigation practices, promoting employee welfare, sustaining wildlife, and giving back to the community are all at the heart of the Durst farm’s mission. The Science & Society sessions provide opportunities for the public and those engaged in research and policymaking to share ideas and concerns. We hope such public discussions will become models for polite and meaningful engagement of participants with differing points of view and that they will increase understanding of the issues and contribute to more informed development of future public policies. All are welcome to attend, and we encourage an open dialog on all the topics presented

    Learn how to safely use the panel saw, drill press, band saw, scroll saw, disc sander, and belt sander in Square One! This one hour class will cover the basics of safe operation. Successful completion allows the patron to return to Square One during open shop hours to use this equipment. Participants must be 18 or older, bring a valid library card and ID, have a signed waiver on file, and wear close-toed shoes.

    An introduction to the 3D printers available in Square One. In this Basic Use and Safety course students will learn how to load filament, upload files for printing, and adjust basic print settings for optimal printer performance. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be authorized to use the 3D printers during open shop hours in Square One. Students must wear close-toed shoes, bring a Woodland Public Library card in good standing, and a photo ID. All participants under the age of 18 must have a liability waiver signed by a parent or guardian in order to attend.

Whether you're building a robot or working with Arduino, knowing how to solder will come in handy. Successful completion allows the patron to return to Square One during open shop hours to use this equipment. Participants must be 12 or older, bring a valid library card and ID, have a signed waiver on file, and wear close-toed shoes.

    Learn how to safely use the 50W CO2 laser cutter in Square One! This two-hour class will cover the basics of safe operation. Participants must be 16 or older, bring a valid library card and ID, have a signed waiver on file, and wear close-toed shoes.

  6. Basic Electricity and Electronics

    February 22, 2020, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Square One

    The course offers hands-on instruction. All hand tools, digital voltmeters, component boards, power supplies, and electronic components will be available to the participants for continued use throughout the duration of the course. Participants will learn how to assemble simple circuits, make electrical measurements, and do simple electrical calculations. Actual working circuits will be assembled on a reusable circuit board, so no soldering is required. The goal is to develop an understanding of circuit parameters such as voltage, current, power, energy, and to learn how to measure or compute these electrical quantities. The correct use and understanding of electrical terms is emphasized. The course is taught by an experienced instructor. Class size is limited. Sign up at the Square One desk. For more technical information on the course, call (530) 723-2099. Participants must be 14 or older, have a valid Woodland Public Library card and a Square One waiver on file.

    Square One is hosting weekly weaving workshops to weavers of all skill levels, ages 14 and up. An experienced weaving instructor will be on hand to give you the basics of using weaving looms as well as hands-on experience with a four heddle loom. You are welcome to bring your own loom and supplies and work on your projects with other beginning and experienced weavers. Square One waivers are required. Please bring your library card and photo ID.
